My charging tag/card is not being accepted — what should I do?

In this article, you will learn what to do if your charging tag or charging card is not recognized by the charging station. Follow the steps below to diagnose and resolve the issue.

1. Check if your charging card is active

  • Log in to your charging card provider’s portal.

  • Confirm that your card is active and not blocked.

  • If applicable, make sure there is sufficient balance/credit.

2. Check whether your provider is supported

Not all charging stations accept all providers.
Verify that your CPO or MSP (e.g. Shell Recharge, EVBox, ANWB, etc.) is supported by the charging point.

Tip: this information is often shown in your provider’s app.

3. Try another charging card or RFID tag

If possible, test with:

  • a second card from the same provider

  • a card from another provider

  • an RFID tag that previously worked

If the second card works → the problem is with the original card.

4. Start the charging session via the app (if available)

Most providers allow remote start through their app:

  1. Open your CPO/MSP app

  2. Select the charging point

  3. Start the charging session manually

This usually works even if the physical card is not accepted.

5. Contact your charging card provider

If the issue persists, your card provider is responsible for:

  • activation

  • authentication

  • roaming

  • blocking/unblocking

  • support

They can explain why your card is not being accepted and resolve the issue directly.
